Geoff Johns has been posting about celebrating in New Orleans now that the live-action sequences have all wrapped and it looks like we’re in the home stretch as fans for seeing image leaks for sets/characters.  Considering the CGI needed for this film, however, we’re still a long way off from anything resembling finished, so take everything you see with a grain of salt.

I’m really proud of this show, as goofy as it seems at times.  As most of you know, I have a day-to-day type of job in radio, and this is kind of the purest form of radio these days.  I’ll write some giant manifesto on it someday, but for now I’ll leave it at this: having an uncensored creative outlet about my favorite hobbies is invaluable to my sanity!

Yes, it's THAT AWESOME.

Last post was about Wednesday/Thursday, so let’s pick up on Friday.

FRIDAY

Gaslamp in the morning. Getting read for the crunch.

Friday I decided would be the day I would try to find all the artists I wanted to meet and get sketches from.  Meeting people you consider a celebrity is always awkward.  Sure, for the most part they’re no different than anyone else, but they ARE bombarded with people constantly vying for their time and, like any cross section of the General Public, a large portion of those fans are out of their gaddam minds, so it’s understandable that they’d be on the defensive.  What I mean by this is: I am a fan who is aware that just being a fan and shaking hands with one of these people does not constitute some magical connection that will instantly trigger them inviting me out for a beer and giving me couch-surfing privileges at their homes.  So I proceed with caution and a little nervousness.

Like Thursday, I saw Fabio Moon & Gabriel Ba (The Umbrella Academy, B.P.R.D., Plixu, Daytripper, etc) and Mike Mignola (Hellboy, B.P.R.D., The Amazing Screw-On Head, etc) all signing at the Dark Horse booth and, again, with no line!  This is the kind of thing that makes me realize there really is something to people saying that Comic-Con isn’t really about comics anymore.  So, I quickly grab a couple of books, jump in line, and score these:

Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon. Brazilian twin fantasy? Complete.

Then, I figured it was time to do my annual stop at J Scott Campbell’s booth to spend entirely too much money with the biggest smile on my face.

I ended up picking up his 2011 “Fairy-tale Fantasies” calendar, the new “Blue Beauties” sketchbook, and THIS:

Said “I love your work, thank you,” and moved on.  Remember, I’m REALLY trying to not fanboy-geek-out.

As I was leaving, a bunch of “Fairy-Tale Fantasy” girls showed up and brought the whole line to a screeching halt.

Yeah, EVERYONE stared.

I can show you the world.

Then, time to ninja!  ”Ninja” is a term applied to shopping for Convention-exclusive items for people who couldn’t attend.  This time, it was off to the Privateer Press’ gaming booth for a “Mega Lo-Tron” figure for the Voltron version of Monsterpocalypse.  That might be the geekiest sentence of this entire post.  But really, I bought stuff for me to, and couldn’t help taking pictures of all the professionally painted pieces.

Shopping for other people sucks, so I went back to finding artists to get sketches from.  I started looking thru Artists Alley (where illustrators sell prints, sketches, etc) and found Alvin Lee.  This guy’s work is incredible and I first started seeing him in UDON’s Street Fighter works.  I chatted with him for a bit and requested a sketch of Psylocke from the X-Men.  Two reasons: A) she’s one of my favorite characters and B) she’s MAD hot and Alvin Lee can draw some mighty fine ladies.  Here’s what I got:

This is WAY more detail and effort than most artists put into a Con Sketch and I absolutely love how it came out.

On that note, on to get something from one of my other favorite artists: Amanda Conner!  I first got introduced to her work thru The Pro, and her run on Power Girl was absolutely amazing.  She said she didn’t do really detailed sketches, but so long as I promised to make a donation to the Hero Initiative or the CBLDF, she’d do what she called a “30 Second Sketch.”  Consider it done.

Getting all this (as well as just meandering about the exhibition floor), took up most of Friday.  It was also the last day my mom was in town, so I wanted to head out and grab dinner with her before she took off the following morning.

SATURDAY

Saturday is always the big movie day.  There are major movie panels going on all weekend, but Saturday is usually the big banner stuff.  This year, Green Lantern, Sucker Punch, and Harry Potter: The Deathly Hallows.  Sucker Punch is the only one with a real trailer, so follow the link for that, anything shown by the other two probably have YouTube virals out there.  Harry Potter is also the reason for the stabbing, because geeks can apparently start shit.  I won’t lie, when I first heard about it, I kinda wanted it to be a Twilight fan.

But who cares!  It’s all about me as I went to the “Cup O’ Joe” panel with Joe Quesada.  He, Matt Fraction, Brian Michael Bendis, CB Cebulski, Jeph Loeb, etc all sat on panel and handed out teasers on upcoming projects.  The big ones seem to be the Red Hulk joining the Avengers, Hardman and Parker taking over the Hulk series, and a teaser of the resurrection of the Cross-Gen imprint in 2011 with a new logo.  Afterwards, Joe Quesada, EIC/CCO of Marvel Comics took the time to talk with me for a moment and pose for this:

Next up, the Spotlight Panel for Brian Michael Bendis.  It was basically a live episode of “The Bendis Tapes” with John Siuntres of Word Balloon (one of my favorite podcasts).  I actually got up and asked a question, which scored me an autographed variant copy of Scarlet #1.  If you listen to that episode of Word Balloon, I’m the 3rd to last person or so.  I fumble my way thru a perspective question and reader involvement.  Ridiculously tongue-tied.

Then, back to the main hall to hunt cosplayers (people who dress up as game/movie/comic book characters).

Then came Saturday night!  Dave had come down from LA and we met up with Jimmy and Keola, who’d also flown in to SD for the Con, for a night of drinking and walking.  A lot of walking.

Here’s where I fall in love with San Diego again.  I love this town and there are some awesome bars and gather places here.  I have no idea what kind of crowd normally goes to each place, but EVERYWHERE was overflowing with geeks.

SUNDAY

Sunday I decided to have a day off that had nothing to do with the Con, so Dave and I went to the Zoo!  Here’s a bunch of randoms from the day:

All of this took until about 2pm, so I ended up right back at the Con!  Had one of the most productive times of my entire trip in the final hours of the show and stood in the hall as it all shut down.

Overall, I love these trips.  For all of the Hollywood BS, all of the crowds, all of the cost, I ALWAYS walk away having had a great time.  Last year was amazing and this year was even better, so I’m thinking next year will be even MORE epic.  For everything you’ve planned that completely falls thru, there’s so much going on that you almost always accidentally fall into something else awesome and fun.

See you out and about Honolulu with a new perspective and a lot less money, LOL.

Day One of the San Diego Comic-Con is done and I’m dead tired!  It was almost productive and totally fun.

But, I’m getting ahead of myself, let me back up.

Thanks to a ton of old Hawaiian Miles sitting in my account, I was actually able to fly out here First Class (totally recommended).

Highly recommended.

The only down side to the experience is that my departure gate was located on the other side of the damn moon and I had walked all the way there before finding out about the Wiki-Wiki shuttle and a mythical Shangra La known as the “First Class Lounge.”  This inconvenience was quickly forgotten with the help of several mamosas before we even taxied out.

They called them "sunrise"s, and I called them "I'll have another"s.

The food was great, too, they feed you three tiny meal dishes instead of one vaccuum-sealed can of dogfood.

After getting to San Diego, I waited for my shuttle and saw this; had to share:

It says, "FREE SHUTTLE, ONLY $9."

So, late start Thursday morning.  I’m also using this vacation to see my mom since she won’t be able to get out to Honolulu for our birthdays later this year.  To celebrate, we did breakfast right at Richard Walker’s Pancake House.  Believe it or not, NO LINE!

They have pancakes WITH BACON MIXED IN! But I got blueberry with bacon on the side, because blueberry is healthy.

Heading in, you’re greated with the giant promo piece for The Hub, an new kid’s network, who’s flagship property (since it’s a Hasbro thing) is none other than Transformers.

Hello, Con. We meet again...

When I hit the main floor, I immediately see Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba signing at the Dark Horse booth with no line! In my mad dash to find a book by them to get signed, they had already left.  CURSES! Foiled again.

I decide to not make this mistake again, so when I see Kenneth Rocafort is signing at Top Cow’s booth, I quickly by a Con-exclusive version of Velocity #1 and get in line.  I was told that I could cut to the front of the line for a signature, but I held out for a sketch.  After an hour and a half, I was told that sketches could only be received if I had a sketch ticket that was passed out earlier that day.  CURSES! Foiled again.  Fortunately, I did get a signature from Rocafort and Marz, as well as Howard and Ottley on Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark.

Up next, a print purchase from another of my favorite artists, Mr. Ben Templesmith, who oozes the charisma and style that guarantees he gets the type of girls I’d be in to.

Cruised the floor for the rest of the day and eventually went to the Podcasting Panel.  I liked seeing all these people I’ve spent so much time listening to, but would love to pick their brains on some of the ideas behind the medium (this actually didn’t seem like the right atmosphere considering they types of questions being discussed).

Rounded out the day having my first real Mexican dinner in I-don’t-know-how-many years.
